The image editor

Describe a change, paint, remove or replace backgrounds, expand and upscale; layers, text, shapes and colour; and making an image in every shape.

The image editor is where you finish a photo or AI image: add text, your logo, shapes and stickers, change colours, or describe a change and let AI make it. Every AI result becomes a new version, and your original is always kept.

This guide also covers making one image in several shapes for different apps.

Open an image

  • In AI Studio, under Edit and finish, click An image to edit, pick a photo and press Open in the Editor →.
  • In AI Studio, under AI tools, click ★ Describe the change · image, Remove background · photo, Remove an object, Expand to a new shape or Upscale to open a photo with that tool ready.
  • In your Library, hover a photo and click Edit, or open its ⋯ menu and choose Open in the Editor or AI tools ▸.
  • On an image post, click ✎ Edit, or ✎ Continue editing once you've edited it.

The picture opens at the post shape closest to its own: 9:16, 4:5, 1:1, 16:9 or 1.91:1. If you've edited the photo before, your last project reopens.

Find your way around

There's no timeline. The picture sits in the middle, Versions runs along the bottom, and the tools on the left are Media, Text, Brand, Adjust, AI tools and Layers. The editor opens on AI tools. Settings for whatever you select appear on the right.

Saving, undo, renaming and the canvas shape work as described in Getting started.

Describe the change

Use this for one change in a sentence, with nothing to paint.

  1. Open AI tools. Describe the change is the highlighted box at the top.
  2. Type one change, for example "put the bottle on a marble counter with morning light, keep the label exactly as it is".
  3. Click Change it. The price shows before you start, and you're only charged if it works.

Only what you describe changes. The framing, the subject and any text or labels are kept. A new version appears in Versions with a spinner, usually in under a minute, and shows on the canvas by itself when it's ready.

More AI tools

Under More AI tools, click a tool to open it. Each shows its price first, and you're only charged if it works.

  • Paint to change: change one area.

    1. Type what goes there, for example "a sprig of mint".
    2. Click Paint the area… and brush over the area. Cover it completely, with a little margin.
    3. Click Use this.
  • Remove an object: click Paint what to remove…, paint over it, then click Use this. The background fills in.

  • Remove background: click Remove it for a clean cut-out with a see-through background.

  • New background: keep the subject and replace what's behind it.

    1. Choose New scene and describe it, for example "a sunny café table", or choose Solid colour and pick a colour.
    2. To keep the subject exactly as it is, click Protect the subject (optional)…, paint over the subject, then click Use this.
    3. Click Change the background.
  • Expand: extend the picture out to a new shape, with AI drawing what lies beyond the edges.

    1. Pick a shape under Expand to.
    2. If you want, say what to add at the edges.
    3. Click Expand.

When it's ready, the canvas changes to the new shape so the new edges show.

  • Upscale: twice the resolution, with sharper detail. It works on pictures up to 2048 pixels on the long side.

Painting an area

In the painter, set the Brush size and paint with your mouse, pen or finger. Clear wipes your painting so you can start again. Cancel closes the painter without charging anything.

Versions

Every AI result becomes a new version of the picture. Original is always first, followed by ✦ 1, ✦ 2 and so on. Tap any version to use it. Nothing is ever lost. Each version is also saved to your Library.

If a tool can't do it, the version is taken off, a note says why, and nothing is charged.

Layers

Everything on the picture is a layer: the photo, extra photos, your logo, stickers, text and shapes. Open Layers to see them, top first, in two groups. Text and shapes always sit above Pictures.

For each layer you can:

  • click its name to select it,
  • hide or show it,
  • lock it,
  • move it up or down within its group.

To copy or remove a layer, select it and use Duplicate or Delete in the Layer section of its settings, or press ⌘D or ⌫. On the picture, drag a layer to move it, drag a corner to resize it, and drag the round handle to turn it.

Add text and shapes

  • Text: open Text and tap a style (Headline, Banner, Impact, Handwritten, Elegant or Call to action). Edit the words, font, size, colour, outline and box on the right, as in Text, logos, stickers, templates and captions.
  • Shapes: under Shapes, tap Button, Rectangle, Rounded or Circle. Set the fill, outline, rounding and size. A Button comes with its own words on top, ready to edit.

Add another photo, your logo or stickers

  • Media: tap a photo from your Library to add it as a layer.
  • Brand: tap your logo to place it in the top-right corner, or tap a sticker. The brand kit is on plans with custom branding. On other plans you can still add your logo from Media.

Adjust the colour and framing

Open Adjust for the main photo. For another picture, select it and use its Adjust tab.

  • Look: Original, Vivid, Punch, Faded, Warm, Cool, B&W or Noir.
  • Adjust: Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Warmth and Sharpen, with Reset.
  • Film: Tone, Colour (Colour, B&W or Sepia), Vignette and Film texture.
  • Frame: fit, rotate, flip and crop. Crop shape keeps a shape such as 1:1 or 4:5 while you drag.

Change the canvas shape

Pick a shape in the Canvas shape menu in the top bar. Everything keeps its place relative to the canvas. On a phone or small tablet, tap ⋯ in the top bar first.

Publish or export

  • Publish → then Make it a post makes an image post, with captions, preview and scheduling on the next page. If the image came from a post, Update the post it came from replaces that post's image once the new one is ready. Making the finished image takes a few seconds.
  • Export → Image (PNG or JPG) to your Library saves the finished image to your Library. When it's ready, click Ready · Download in the top bar.

For both, choose PNG (sharpest) or JPG (smaller file), and the canvas size or twice that size (2×). The finished image usually takes a few seconds and costs no credits.

Make one image in every shape

There are two ways to get your image in more shapes. They work differently.

Make every size (in the editor, no credits)

Make every size ▸ in the top bar saves your design in all five shapes, 1:1, 4:5, 9:16, 16:9 and 1.91:1, to your Library at once, each named with its shape. It re-lays your design on each shape, and photos set to fill the canvas are re-cropped. Nothing new is drawn. It uses no credits and takes a few seconds.

Sizes for a post (AI-extended)

For an image post, VibeDay can make the other shapes each app needs from your finished image. It keeps the whole design and draws in extra background to fill the new shape. Each size shows its price first and is only charged when it's ready.

When you create an image in AI Studio:

  1. Under Where will you post this?, tap the shape you mainly want: Story / Reel / Short, Feed post, Square, YouTube / Landscape or Link ad. It's tagged main.
  2. Tap any other shapes you want. These are made from the main image once it's ready.
  3. Generate as usual. The total shown includes the extra sizes.

A Link ad can only be the main shape.

On a post:

  1. Under the platform preview, find Sizes.
  2. Tap the shapes you want, then click Make. If you're previewing a format that crops your design, a one-tap button offers to make that size.
  3. Each size usually takes about a minute and replaces the crop in the preview automatically.

Once a post has extra sizes, its Image card shows a tab for each: Original, then each size, with a spinner while it's being made. Tap a tab to see it large.

When you publish: the publish window shows What each platform gets. For each platform, it shows whether it gets your image as it is, one of your made sizes, or a crop, with a button to make the missing size. If a size is still being made, the post waits for it, up to 8 minutes, and a notice at the top of the post shows the wait and when it's done. Any platform whose size isn't ready by then gets your original image.
